about

A year after the release of 2021 album Radio Sketches, acclaimed songsmith Charles Jenkins returns with Radio Sketches 2 – The Death of Stars, another collection of songs served up from a Sunday radio show and sent out to the world from Melbourne, Australia.

If you’re unfamiliar with the game, it goes like this: each week 3RRR’s Jon Von Goes selects a new theme and a tasty bunch of Melbourne songwriters do cover versions of songs which reflect the theme. Or in the case of Charles Jenkins, write a new song to suit.

For each of the tracks in this new collection, Charles quickly sketched out the songs on guitar before sending them on to his Icecream Hands cohort, Douglas Lee Robertson, who turned them into the technicolour renditions you see before you.

The weekly themes such as 'Moods, My Soul, My Head, Directions, Highway, Radio, Evening, Ponies, Chaos and Things You Were Previously Unaware Of’ gave rise to ballads, country, gospel, soul and pop songs. It’s all over the shop, as it should be, but each song holds its own, inviting the listener into a story laced with Jenkins's acute lyrical observations and trademark wit and subtlety.

First single The Many Moods of Love is a heartbreaker of a song, and a brilliant example of how well Jenkins and Robertson collaborate. It's a simple yet intriguing lyric and gorgeous melody from Charles, turned into something lush and emotional by Douglas Lee's beautiful string and piano parts.
